How I built my business

Let's rewind back to 2011, when I was a senior in high school determining what I wanted to do with my life. So much pressure for an 18-year-old, right? Lucky for me, I tapped into my artistic side at a very young age. My family was a family full of artists and hardworking people. I always knew I wanted to be independent, self-sufficient, and free to create the way I wanted to. I loved getting my friends dolled up for prom, dances, and so on. My first wedding was done at the age of 18, and I immediately fell in love with event work. To see clients happy and feeling confident is always what kept me motivated to pursue this more seriously as a career.
circa 2013

Doing hair and makeup is the fun part, but working with strangers, customer service, self-promotion, education on chemicals and sanitation, product knowledge, and legality are all a part of the career. I started off at a salon as a commission stylist working 6 days a week for 2 years. I then leveled up to renting and made myself my own business behind the chair. I was responsible for all my own clients, products, and rent. The salon was a great place to grow, and I have the clients I have now from that experience. After 8 years behind the chair, I decided to venture more into weddings and set work again, my first true love.

Opening the Airstream was a catalyst for the salon I have now. My wedding work boomed, and I was able to expand. I joined WeddingWire, connected with wedding planners, and did a lot of promotional shoots to advertise.

Growing my business has completely relied on me staying consistent, creative, and flexible with changes. Failures lead us to restructure for the better. I have taken classes, become an educator myself, traveled for work, learned from the best, and am always looking to do better.

So, the best place to start? Listen to your heart, your passion, and learn how to make it a career. Balance life and don't burn out. Be curious and brave. The things I regret are the opportunities I didn't take out of fear or insecurity. Always try; you can readjust again. In order to find true alignment you must pave and follow your own path.
